Fort Salonga, NY Local Area Information

Fort Salonga is a hamlet in Suffolk County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. The name evolved from the Revolutionary War British Fort Salonga, or Fort Slongo, (named after one of the fort's architects) once located near the border of Huntington Township and The Town of Smithtown, overlooking the Long Island Sound. Fort Salonga is a community at the northwest town line of the Town of Smithtown. One night Colonial forces landed on the beach in nearby Crab Meadow, and moving down the beach overtook the fort. In the post Civil War era the rich red clay deposits gave birth to a successful brickworks as well as other trade. Barges loaded with manure swept from the streets of New York City would arrive and farmers from nearby towns would come to get the manure for fertilizer and the emptied barges were then loaded with bricks for the trip back to the city. One of the brick companies to operate there in the late 19th century was owned by the Brown family whose bricks bore the initials BBB for Brown�¢ï¿½ï¿½s Best Bricks. The family home on the top of the hill on Breeze Hill Road has served as the clubhouse for the Indian Hills Country Club since 1963. Fort Salonga straddles both the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown. Because of this, students attend either the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District or the Kings Park Central School District. This community is located along the Long Island Sound in the north eastern most part of the Town of Huntington. The property zoning in this community is mostly an acre or more with only a few neighborhoods with property sizes less than an acre. This fact has helped to maintain higher property values than the surrounding communities. Fort Salonga has a very small commercial strip area that offers a grocery store, drug store, veterinarian, and a nice Italian restaurant. For everything else, Fort Salonga residents rely on Northport Village just next door. However, even though this community is mostly residential, it borders Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island Sound which offers a pristine beach, restroom facilities, Three 9 hole golf courses and some of the best running trails in the area. Access to the Park is by way of Sunken Meadow State Parkway which bisects Suffolk County and runs from the Long Island Sound to the South Shore.
