Centerport is a hamlet located in the Township of Huntington in Suffolk County. Centerport is nestled between Huntington Village and Northport Village along Route 25A. Centerport has its own post office and zip code 11721. Formerly known as Little Cow Harbor (about 1700), Centerport's name refers to its geographic position midway between the east and west boundaries of the township of Huntington. Centerport is predominantly residential characterized by windy driveways and beachfront hills with only a handful of shops, services and restaurants. Centerport is home to a couple of the few waterfront dining establishments along Huntingtons shore line. The Mill Pond House, one of Huntington''s most popular upscale restaurants is open year-round and offers peaceful views of the Mill Pond, thus its name. Also overlooking the Mill Pond is the Thatched Cottage which is a very popular and busy catering establishment that offers a lovely setting for those special events. If you are looking for something a bit less formal, there is outdoor dining, picnic-style at the Clam Bar but check before going because it is open seasonally, weather permitting. As is common among the many beachfront locations on Long Island's North Shore, Centerport has developed a large boating and sailing culture. An important part of this culture is the Centerport Yacht Club, which was founded in 1947 and has served as a social and athletic focal point for the boating community in both Centerport and its surrounding areas. The yacht club sponsors a variety of racing fleets and regattas every year generally beginning in the late spring and ending mid-autumn. Centerport is in the Harborfields Central School District. The schools include Harborfields High School, Oldfield Middle School, T.J. Lahey Elementary School, and the Washington Drive Primary School. In the past, the district has received Blue Ribbon awards of excellence. Huntington and its surrounding hamlets mark the east end of Long Island's renowned "Gold Coast", the name deriving from the traditional wealth and gentility associated with the area. Centerport became home to many affluent families in the early twentieth century and a prime example is the mansion of William Kissam Vanderbilt II, otherwise known as the Vanderbilt Estate. His will dictated that the 43-acre estate and grounds be used as a museum, which it became in 1950. A planetarium was also constructed (by the county) on the grounds in 1970. Centerport is a quiet, bedroom community that offers homes in all price ranges from the 1st time home buyer to the luxury waterfront estate. There is something for everyone.
